Detailed description:

To combat the urban heat island effect in cities of the Mediterranean region, ENGIE and a number of institutional, economic and non-profit partners are launching a call for innovative solutions.

Proposed solutions must be able to be developed over the short or medium terms

They must also be able to be commercialized and/or exported.

They must be innovative, whether in terms of technologies they incorporate, focus on a “low tech” approach, or deal with services, particularly those that inform decision-making (diagnostics, project management, etc.) or concrete and technical responses to the open question of how to better live in an urban context in the Mediterranean region.

The projects, whatever their scale or level of intervention, must result in improvements in combatting urban heat islands and improving the comfort and quality of life for urban city center users and residents, and potentially other additional benefits, whether environmental (biodiversity, waste), social (urban agriculture, etc.) or economic, following the principles of multifunctional use and not causing further environmental degradation.

Responses to the call for projects can have to do with overall solutions or individual “bricks” at a micro scale or that of a building. However, they must be relevant and specific to the urban heat islands in the Mediterranean.

The projects involving existing urban development zones will get particular attention from the selection Committee.

The projects submitted will remain the property of their respective owners. The Group may nevertheless propose an economic collaboration that will be negotiated case-by-case.

Examples of solutions being sought out:

- Engineering, services: systems for improving diagnostics/decision-making

- Emergence of accessible techniques for measuring and modeling, analyzing and managing flows of traffic and people

- Passive technical solutions (recladding surface materials, natural ventilation, new plantings, etc.)

- Active technical solutions (thermal smart grids, storage systems, etc.)

- Solutions for avoiding the creation of urban heat islands during the densification of existing urban tissue, particularly as regards the ALUR Law.

Eligibility and selection criteria:

Applications will be judged based on the following criteria:

- Appropriateness given the subject

- Originality/innovative nature (new technologies/approaches/procedures)

- Feasibility

- Project’s capacity for being rapidly tested and/or implemented

- Coherence of the planned business model

- Suitability of the technology to the proposed usages

- Societal, environmental and energy performance

- Respect of current rules and regulations

Provisional calendar and selection procedure:

June 17th: Launch of the call for projects during ENGIE’s Innovation Day in Marseille at the MuCEM

Candidates must participate in one of the two pitch sessions to be held on :

  • November 23rd, 2015: pitch session in Montpellier (Languedoc Roussillon), Sign up
  • November 26th 2015: pitch session in Aix en Provence, (Provence-Alpes-Cote d’Azur) Sign up

December 4th, 2015: deadline for submissions.
