Ranking AI in Cities : Singapore runs first

There’s no limit to the potential for new technologies to make our cities cleaner, greener and more efficient. More and more, Artificial Intelligence is seen as the key to making it happen. But how well are cities taking advantage of AI — and how prepared are they for its impact?

The global management consulting firm Oliver Wyman conducted a study on 105 cities worldwide to determine their capacity to adopt AI, breaking down its findings into four categories: their plan, their ability to execute it, talent pool and education initiatives, and the overall momentum of their AI adoption.

Singapore topped the list with an average rating of 75.8 out of 100. The Asian city-state’s commitment to integrating new technology into urban living is undeniable, having spent more money than any other city in the world this year to use AI and other digital tools to improve public transportation networks, care for its senior citizens and create an open data marketplace.

Social impact

Yet the study found that not even the most advanced cities were truly ready for the changes ahead. Not a single municipality finished in the top 20 across all four categories, and none appears in the top 10 across three. The main obstacle for many? While many cities are working to adopt AI itself, they’re not prepared for its social and economic aftermath, such as rising unemployment rates.

A notable difference was also registered in how residents of different cities viewed the impact of AI. For example: in Shanghai, 95% of residents believe it improves their lives, while just 47 % of Berliners think the same. — Les Echos (French)
