Methanization : the avenues for innovation, by Antoine Poupart, Technical and Business Development Director at InVivo Agrosolutions

InVivo -France’s number-one cooperative group for agricultural trade and services- and GDF SUEZ started a partnership with a view to finding innovative solutions regarding methanization, last summer. During GDF SUEZ’ second Innovation Morning held on January 28 at the Village, in Paris, Antoine Poupart, Technical and Business Development Director at InVivo Agrosolutions, testified of both parties’ will to ensure the development of this sustainable energy.

Methanisation aka "anaerobic fermentation" fermentation” enables the recycling of organic matter. This biological process happens naturally in the environment and produces two residues: biogas, a source of sustainable energy, and digestate, used as a fertilizer. Methanization also allows organic wastes’ reduction and reduces methane emissions (a powerful greenhouse gas).

With an established global warming risk and the numerous assets of this natural process, methanization has become a major agro-ecological challenge. France’s number-one cooperative group for agricultural trade and services and GDF SUEZ join forces and share know-how to enhance the methanization process, up and downstream.

Where does the reflection on innovation of the Research & Development teams of InVivo and GDF SUEZ stand? Inspired by the solutions imagined for better pet-food “digestibility”, both groups started considering methanizers as “mechanical cows”. To design tomorrow’s biological reactors, they focused on the same innovations as those recommended for animals. Only by enhancing methanizers’ “digestibility” will they successfully enhance the methanization process.
