CES 2019 – Icomera: the future of transport is digital

Tell us about your story with ENGIE

ENGIE, through its subsidiary ENGIE Ineo, acquired Icomera in May 2017 as part of its commitment to supporting smarter, greener mobility. The acquisition was a natural step for Icomera as the two companies already shared a culture and a common goal.

ENGIE Ineo has been working to create a better connected world and sees connected public transport vehicles as a key element of delivering the smart / digital cities of the future. In the year and a half since the acquisition we’ve enjoyed the opportunity to speak to new audiences internally and externally about what we have to offer.   


What does it mean for you to participate to the CES?

Of course CES is a special show - a large international audience, across a wide range of technology sectors, and that’s very exciting. But as a still relatively new acquisition of ENGIE, CES also gives Icomera an early opportunity to put our technology in front of other Innovation teams in the group and identify new areas where we can work together, utilising our respective skills and expertise.


What will you showcase at CES and why this?

Icomera will present a range of mobile Internet connectivity tools and applications for public transport. In particular we will display the Icomera X5 - a high-performance multi-radio mobile access & applications router. It’s the latest product to give mass transit operators access to Icomera's advanced X-Series platform, supporting multiple, resource-intensive applications such as Passenger Wi-Fi, Infotainment and real-time CCTV simultaneously as part of a single solution.  It will officially launch in  2019 and we believe it is the first 5G-ready router in our segment. 


What would be the magic meeting for you at CES?

We’re always interested in speaking to forward-thinking public transport authorities, operators and manufacturers, those who have accepted that the future of transport is digital. They are coming to CES looking to take the step along that path, utilising the latest new mobile telecommunication technologies at the earliest opportunity and pass the benefits on to their customers, in the form of an enhanced passenger experience.

How do you imagine connectivity in 2030?

The future lies in new technology trends such as 5G (and later generations of cellular communications) and enabling the Internet of Things where many devices must be connected, not just individuals.

Firstly, new safety and security legislations will also require mobile data bandwidth. Citizens, including transport staff, need to feel safe traveling on public transport. Onboard safety and security systems are becoming much more sophisticated and enabling these systems to transmit images, audio and data wirelessly from the moving vehicle will lead to faster (sometimes automated), more appropriate and more proactive responses to onboard incidents.

Secondly, transport operators recognise that the reliability and timeliness of their service is important to passengers. They will increasingly use digitalisation of onboard systems and remote diagnostics to improve operational efficiency. Efficient maintenance lowers costs or allows the same resources to do more. The increased availability of vehicles (due to less unscheduled maintenance) will ultimately improve schedule adherence. Savings in maintenance costs can additionally be passed on to passengers through lower ticket prices, encouraging greater ridership. There are so many wins!
