Unlocking the full potential of energy storage with BESS Advanced Analytics

Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are a critical part of the clean energy transition, storing electricity – often from renewable sources - for use when and where it is needed most. These systems support grid stability, reduce reliance on fossil fuels, and improve the economics of energy production. But, as battery fleets grow, so do the challenges of monitoring performance, managing degradation, and ensuring safety at scale.  ENGIE’s Research and Innovation teams are developing innovative tools to tackle these challenges and unlock the full potential of energy storage. One exciting tool is BESS Advanced Analytics, which will be showcased at ENGIE’s stand at Viva Technology on June 11-14.

From state of charge imbalance detection to aging and degradation prediction, BESS Advanced Analytics delivers the insights operators need to boost performance, extend asset life, and enhance safety.

This is where innovation meets impact—delivering smarter and more sustainable energy storage.

BESS Advanced Analytics revolutionises battery management with AI. From state of charge imbalance detection to aging and degradation prediction, it delivers the insights operators need to boost performance, extend asset life, and enhance safety. Smarter storage starts here.

Allison Farnan, Breakthrough AI Product Manager at Laborelec, one of ENGIE’s four research centres – answers our questions.

Could you present your solution in a few sentences, emphasizing its innovative aspects?

BESS Advanced Analytics is a programme dedicated to the development of AI-driven solutions for revolutionising battery management, enhancing system performance, and addressing safety challenges in energy storage systems. By leveraging advanced analytics and artificial intelligence, this initiative delivers deep insights into battery behaviour, enabling operators to optimise BESS performance and extend the lifetime of their assets. This initiative addresses critical challenges such as battery degradation and state of charge imbalance detection, making smarter energy storage a reality.

The programme focuses on several key challenges:

  • Predictive State of Charge (SoC) Modelling
  • Cell State of Charge (SoC) Imbalance
  • Degradation and Ageing Detection
  • AI-Driven KPIs

BESS Advanced Analytics unlocks the intelligence needed to make batteries not just more efficient and reliable, but truly strategic assets in the transition to a decarbonised energy future.

What will you be showing at Vivatech?

We’ll be showcasing an interactive demo of our BESS Advanced Analytics tool, allowing users to explore how AI and advanced analytics can transform complex battery data into clear, actionable insights. The demo highlights how the tool can be used directly to guide operational decisions, optimise performance, and unlock the full value of energy storage systems.

What are your expectations for participating in Viva Technology?

We’re excited to connect with innovators shaping the future of sustainable energy. VivaTech is a great opportunity to learn from others, gain fresh perspectives, and grow through meaningful dialogue. Our team is looking forward to exchanging insights, discovering new ideas, and exploring how AI and advanced analytics can play a bigger role in accelerating the energy transition.

What will your next challenge be?

Our next challenge is to move from proof of concept to real-world pilots—turning powerful analytics into tangible impact. Our next phase is about validating our AI models in live environments, refining the solution with operators, and laying the foundation for scalable deployment across ENGIE’s global BESS fleet. This is where innovation meets impact—delivering smarter and more sustainable energy storage.

What question would you have liked me to ask you?

“How does your work contribute to the broader energy transition?”

By improving the efficiency, reliability, and longevity of battery storage systems, we help unlock their full potential as flexible, clean energy assets. BESS Advanced Analytics supports grid stability and accelerates the integration of renewables—key steps toward a net-zero future.

Visit the ENGIE stand (J39) at Porte de Versailles in Paris from 11 to 14 June to discover the innovative solutions that make ENGIE the leader in energy transition.
