CES 2019: NREL – Bringing CleanTech to Market

Q: - Richard, what would you like to say about NREL?

NREL is one 17 national labs across the USA which make up the lab system of the Department of Energy (DOE). NREL, which celebrated its 40th anniversary last year, is doubly unique in being both a single mission and an applied lab. As an applied lab, we work on renewable energy and energy efficiency solutions that are closer to market. In addition to the research and development work we do here at NREL, we also partner with industry, startups, investors, and other agencies to help solve the challenges they have in achieving their energy goals.

Currently, we have over 750 active partnerships.

Q: - And what is your story with ENGIE?

Currently, ENGIE is among the 40-plus investors on our Investor Advisory Board. On the basis of our great relationship and shared vision of the energy future, we are now exploring opportunites for NREL and ENGIE to partner on R&D projects of mutual interest. So far, we are looking at Distributed Energy Management Systems (DERMS), Access to Energy, especially in developing markets like Africa and Asia, Smart Buildings and Cities, and Blockchain.

Q: - What does it mean for you to participate in CES?

Well, this will be our first appearance at CES. It will be really great to have the opportunity to make ourselves known – showcased by such an important partner, and at such a high profile event!

Q: - What will you showcase at CES and why?

There will be a video presenting the lab and some of our research projects, and we will have some of our staff at the booth to talk with people interested in learning more about our work, or how to partner with NREL.

Q: - What would be the 'magic encounter' for you at CES?

If I can be frank, I think the first 'magic encounter' is likely to be with Isabelle Kocher, ENGIE's CEO! But it will be interesting simply to see who comes to see us.

Q. - How do you imagine renewable energy in 2030?

Over the next 10-15 years, the penetration of renewable energy should accelerate. In parallel, with the development of energy-efficient technologies, we are likely to see significant changes in building design. I also expect the electrification of passenger vehicles to intensify, with more manufacturers releasing more electric vehicle models. The associated infrastructure will also continue to expand, to accomodate this growing demand.
