Repurposing second-life batteries as energy storage: Connected Energy @ Viva Technology

Connected Energy develops and deploys low impact commercial scale modular energy storage systems that utilize 2nd life electric vehicle batteries. They have been part of the ENGIE family since 2017 when ENGIE New Ventures, the corporate venture arm of ENGIE, invested in the company. They were at Viva Technology alongside ENGIE from June 15 to 17 and we asked them a few questions.

Our groundbreaking battery storage systems and revolutionary technology enable EV car batteries to have a 2nd life.

Could you present the company in a few words?

At Connected Energy, we are pioneers in the circular economy, thanks to our groundbreaking battery storage systems and revolutionary technology that enables EV car batteries to have a 2nd Life. By serving a variety of applications they enable our customers to generate revenue, reduce their energy costs and optimize renewable generation.

What are you going to present at Vivatech?

We will show a 3D printed Model of one of our containerized battery, with 24 batteries insides.
It is designed so that you can open the doors et see what’s inside.

How is it innovative?

Our Battery Storage systems are compiled of 2nd Life EV batteries. Actually, when the batteries are taken out of vehicles, they still have up to 70% of their capacity available. With our unique technology and control systems we are able to give them a second life, which can be up to another 10 years! This negates the need for the batteries to be recycled prematurely, which would waste a precious resource.
As Matthew Lumsden, Connected Energy’s CEO, says: “I get the impression that we set out to create a technology and a business, and created an industry. Everything we do is new, and we always end up far from our point of departure. It's fascinating.”

What do you expect from this participation in Viva Technology?

We hope to learn and engage with passionate individuals who are committed to contributing towards engineering advancement to support a sustainable society.

For you, the future will be?

We are proud of our contribution towards a flexible, electrified, and sustainable economy that captures and harnesses excess energy and maximises the utilisation of valuable resources.
