IoT for greener cities Challenge

After the successful Decarbonathon Challenge that took place last year, the Young Global Leaders of the World Economic Forum launch a new challenge: IoT for greener cities.The aim of the challenge is to use the Internet of Things and other IT innovations to reduce CO2 emissions and improve local air quality.

This new challenge is looking for IT-based innovations that particularly utilise the potential of the Internet of Things (IoT) to to reduce the environmental footprint of houses, buildings and transport in our cities.

The competition focuses on three main categories:

  • smart solutions for households,
  • smart solutions for energy-efficient buildings,
  • sustainable mobility in an urban environment.


How to take part ?

  • Create or join a team of 1 to 5 participants and
  • imagine a new, digital smart solution that uses the Internet of Things and other IT innovations to reduce the environmental footprint of our cities
  • Register on the IoT for Greener Cities Challenge website before March 22


What's in it for me?

15 finalist teams will be selected and will have access to coaching by a team of experts and will pitch their idea in front of an international jury.

The winners will have the opportunity to present their project during the ENGIE Innovation Week in June 2017 and get their project incubated. This challenge also gives you the chance to win €10,000 worth of prizes.



Provisionnal Calendar:

  • Deadline for registration : March 22, 2017
  • Annoucement of finalists : April 4, 2017
  • Pitch of the finalits in front of an international prestigious jury and announcement of the 3 winning teams: May 15 & 16,2017 in Brussels (Belgium)
