R&I scouting for new solutions at E-world

R&I scouting for new solutions at E-world

E-world is the Meeting Place for the European Energy Industry. On February 10-12 in Essen, a new record was set with more than 37000 attendees and 1136 exhibitors showcasing their solutions for energy supply. Key topics included the energy transition in connection with security of supply, as well as the applications of new storage technologies and artificial intelligence.  Guy Dreessen, from the I&E team was there, and we asked him a few questions.

Guy, why did you attend E-world?

E-World is the yearly conference to discover the newest innovations in the energy industry and of course to showcase ENGIE's expertises.

What were the main topics in your opinion?

Electrification in the industry and transport, power grid constraints, startups, use of AI in energy...

What did you find there?

Across the meetings held during the event, several clear strategic themes emerged:

1. Growing Focus on Grid Congestion Management and Flexibility

Solutions like advanced digital monitoring, flexibility platforms, DC‑grid approaches, and smarter forecasting. Overall, the sector is moving towards more automated, data‑driven ways to manage constraints and integrate renewable energy.

2. Rapid Evolution of Electric Mobility Infrastructure

Electric mobility, especially for heavy transport, is accelerating. Two trends stand out: the integration of battery storage into High Power Charging sites and the development of off‑grid or grid‑light charging solutions to bypass local grid limitations.

3. Scaling of Renewable Gas and Bio‑Energy

Bio‑CNG and bio‑LNG continue to grow, with strong emphasis on industrial‑scale production and optimized logistics through injection into the gas grid. These fuels still play an important role for heavy mobility and hybrid energy systems.

4. Momentum in Energy‑Tech Innovation and Startup Ecosystems

Incubators, venture units, and living labs are increasingly active, supporting early‑stage companies in flexibility, storage, digitalization, and energy management. Corporate–startup collaboration is clearly accelerating.

In the end, E‑world once again demonstrated how quickly the energy landscape is evolving and how essential it is for ENGIE to stay connected to emerging solutions. The event highlighted a clear shift toward smarter, more flexible, and more resilient energy systems, driven by digitalization, storage, and low‑carbon innovation. For R&I, these insights help sharpen our scouting efforts and ensure we continue identifying the technologies and partners that will shape tomorrow’s energy transition.
