Exploring the Future of Marine Energy at VivaTech 2025 in a fun & interactive way

Interview with Elodie du Fornel, Lead Scientific Advisor, and Rémi Dreux, Program Funding & Performance Manager at ENGIE's Research & Innovation department.

We co-designed a dynamic app that lets users explore nine key ocean-based technologies, discover their synergies, and test their knowledge through a fun final quiz.

Our goal is to raise awareness about the technologies shaping the future of energy and to accelerate the energy transition.

Tell us a bit about this project.

Since 2016, ENGIE’s Research & Innovation (R&I) team has published an annual report on Emerging Sustainable Technologies. The 2024 edition takes a deep dive into 13 innovative marine energy technologies, offering real-world examples and a long-term vision of their potential impact.

This year, the report has been transformed into an interactive digital experience, developed in collaboration with students from Créasup Digital.

The result? A dynamic app that lets users explore nine key ocean-based technologies, discover their synergies, and test their knowledge through a fun final quiz.

How will you present this at VivaTech?

We’re bringing the report to life at VivaTech through an interactive kiosk where visitors can explore the app firsthand. Developed as a student-led project, the app offers:

An engaging user experience

  • Accessible via web, tablet, or touchscreen
  • A personalized journey based on user interests and technology synergies

Interactive features

  • A quiz to raise awareness about renewable marine technologies
  • The option to download the full report for deeper insights

What do you expect from this participation in Viva Technology?

Our goal is to raise awareness about the technologies shaping the future of energy and to accelerate the energy transition. VivaTech offers the perfect platform to:

  • Present the report’s key findings in an engaging, interactive format
  • Showcase technologies, their maturity levels, and potential impact
  • Use dynamic visualizations like maps, timelines, and evaluation matrices to make complex data more accessible

What challenges will you face next?

We’re already looking ahead to the 2025 edition of the report. Our next challenge is to co-design a new interactive application that continues to make complex scientific insights accessible and engaging for a wide audience.

What question would you have liked me to ask you?

"How did this idea come about?"

The concept was born from a dual realization: the richness of ENGIE R&I’s annual report and the need to make it more accessible to a broader audience. We wanted to bridge the gap between strategic insights and user experience by creating an app that is explorable, customizable, and inspiring.

This project also gave us the opportunity to collaborate with Créasup Digital, whose students brought fresh perspectives, creativity, and design expertise. Together, we created an immersive experience at the crossroads of education, innovation, and user-centered design.

It’s our way of raising awareness differently—by putting innovation at the service of the energy transition and the transmission of knowledge.
